Alongside the workshop, we grow and tend a collection of succulents — echeverias, haworthias, sedums and more. Each one grown slowly, potted by hand, and sold at local fairs and directly from the studio.

Every piece begins with a conversation
Every Humbirds piece starts the same way — with a chat about your garden, your space, and what you want it to feel like. Then we go to the workshop and build something that fits.Nothing here is mass produced. No two pieces are identical. Each bird table, nest box, insect house or tortoise enclosure is made by hand from solid UK hardwood, finished in a colour of your choosing, and built to last far longer than anything you'd find in a garden centre.
The journey here began long before the first bird box was built. Growing up as the son of a farmer on the Isle of Wight — later moving to the remote forestry-edged hills of Oakamoor in Staffordshire — country life was everything. The dawn chorus was our morning soundtrack, and a love of nature was part of daily life from the very start.
A career in aerospace engineering followed, winning Apprentice of the Year at British Aerospace before moving into automotive — eventually reaching Engineering Director and Global Programme Manager. That precision and attention to detail never left. It just found a better use.Retiring in 2023, the countryside workshop that had been quietly producing bespoke garden furniture for years finally became the main event. My father's love of gardening did the rest — from perfectly timed planting to the greenhouse, fruit trees and potting shed that still surround the workshop today.
Because when nature thrives, everything else follows.
